Trenes Argentinos or simply SOFSE, is the national railway of Argentina. The infrastructure includes a network of 3,870 km of rail track that with its 360 stations and 1,893 daily train services keeping the country connected. Under the Ministry of Transportation the entire set up contributes to the integration of the state under a Multimodal Transportation System framework – by efficiently transporting more than 345 million passengers annually.
The Alerce is an Argentine railcar produced by the Emepa Group and used on commuter rail services across Argentina. Each train has the capacity to transport 240 passengers and its engine operates smart doors, AC, security, disabled access and Wi-Fi. Railcar engines, however, can catch fire from the combination of oil or flammable fluid leaks, high temperatures and electrical short circuits. These incidents can damage critical equipment, endanger lives and result in operational losses. Accordingly, fire protection systems are critical for safe civil transportation services.
Design, install and commission a reliable automatic fire suppression system for the protection of the Emepa Alerce railcar engines. The Alerce’s engine bay is located between the two carriages on its own articulated bogie and the housing is surrounded by mission critical equipment. The task is to safeguard the engine and the critical assets that are vital to the Emepa Alerce train operations. This requires a compact and dependable solution capable of suppressing fires while avoiding causing any environmental damage upon activation.
FirePro technology is compact and its fire suppression system is efficient, effective, very robust and can withstand unusual vibrations. This allows specialists to design highly modular and effective fire suppression systems to fit in challenging spaces such as engine rooms where enclosure integrity is limited. In addition, the condensed aerosol generators have a 15-year product lifespan. It is a solution that can protect from multiple classes of fire in an ecofriendly way without contaminating the environment upon activation.
EMEPA S.A. Engineers selected the FirePro solution since it combined all the operational and technical parameters required. The systems have been designed according to UL 2775 and installed according to NFPA 2010 applicable project requirements. FirePro technology currently protects these extremely critical assets across Argentina. The fire suppression systems are ready to activate and eliminate any fire incidents inside the engine bay. Finally, FirePro’s extinguishing agent remains environmentally friendly both during and post discharge thus strengthening the company’s green profile.
