One of the main sorting and processing centre of used and discarded batteries in the Netherlands. Millions of batteries are collected and processed at its premises each year from where they are later transported throughout Europe for further handling. This processing facility ensures a safe and responsible collection while it helps maximize used battery recycling. What’s more, it offers consultations to other companies and organizations across the EU in regards to end-of-battery-lifecycle management.
FirePro Benelux delivered a solution based on the specifications required, the container volume and a wellengineered design that permitted the installation and maintenance of the FirePro System and its Units. The system currently protects intermodal containers across Europe against LiB related fire incidents. These Intermodal Container Units are an innovative solution to the endclient and the industry worldwide.
LiBs are growing in appeal for use in military, electric vehicles and aerospace applications. Their growing use however, has brought with it an increase in fire incidents related to current LiB technology. The task therefore, was to design, install and maintain a fast response fire detection and suppression system for the custom-made intermodal means of transportation of used and compromised Lithium-ion batteries. The intermodal fire protection had to be compact, durable and reliable in order to fulfil the application’s specific requirements. It should also be designed according to the requirements of BRL-K23001, BRL-K23003 and KIWA declaration of design evaluation P161200382-02 on Lithium-ion Batteries.
The modularity, compactness and autonomy of the system are fundamental factors in the equation. Yet, it is compliance to legislation according to primary research that was the key to this very challenging application.
