The Polar Pioneer was primarily built as an ice-strengthened research vessel, with ice class 1A Super for navigation in Polar Regions. Following an overhaul, it now serves as one of the most popular expedition platforms for polar enthusiasts with a successful overhaul and reintroduction to polar waters from Svalbard. It is one of only 10 Akademik Shuleykin-class vessels remaining operational in the Arctic and Antarctic Peninsula.
Polar Pioneer usually navigates in heavily ice-covered waters and far from ports and rescue teams. Thus, it is crucial to protect its crew, passengers, and the vessel’s operational capabilities from fire risks. Fire on a vessel typically arises from electrical faults, fuel leaks and human error. A small fire can escalate rapidly with catastrophic consequences for the vessel and everyone on board. A fire suppression system is therefore essential to protect mission critical equipment while operating in harsh conditions.
Design, install and commission fire suppression systems in the Main Engine Room, Control Room, Ship’s Funnel, Emergency Diesel Generator, Incinerator, Paint Room and the Shaft Funnel, covering a total net volume of almost 1,000 m³, and in effect protecting all three deck areas. The protected rooms are mission critical and heavily congested, therefore it is crucial that the fire suppression systems selected are reliable and can be easily installed and maintained.
FirePro systems are compact and light therefore minimizing the space and weight burden on a vessel. They have an exceptional track record of reliability and require minimal maintenance over a certified lifetime of 15 years. More importantly, they are not pressurized and operate at temperatures ranging from -54°C to +54°C. The systems are in compliance with the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) 2014/90/EU, holding Type Approvals from RINA and other IACS members according to IMO MSC/Circ 1270.
Garant Protech designed and successfully completed the installation of the six FirePro Marine systems, which currently protect on a 24/7 basis the above mentioned mission critical spaces. The efficiency, effectiveness, and robustness of the systems provide strong assurance and allow Polar Pioneer’s passengers and crew to safely carry out their expeditions. FirePro systems are chosen by leading stakeholders in the marine industry as they can be supported through a global network of trained channel partners.
