Alfa-Beta Vassilopoulos is one of the largest chain of supermarkets and retail food stores in Greece. The ABV retail shop network consists of 567 stores across the country and employs a workforce of more than 14,000 people. ABV is a subsidiary of Ahold Delhaize (AMS: AD), a Dutch-Belgian multinational food retailer with operations in three continents, a 6,500-store network and about 375,000 personnel.
Electrical panels containing capacitors to counteract power surges play a significant role in any business. Statistics indicate however that they can also be a major cause of fire. Circuit breakers can occasionally overload and manifest electrical shorts that consequently initiate fires. The route cause might be bad design, human error, ageing and/or neglect. Irrespective of the cause, operators need to be vigilant to protect assets from fire especially where people’s lives, premises and business continuity are at risk.
Design, supply, install, commission and maintain a fire detection and fire extinguishing system inside the electrical panels (containing capacitors) as well as in the substations of all ABV stores. The fire extinguishing technology needed to be efficient and effective, require little or no maintenance, have a long life-cycle and an environmentally friendly footprint. The maintenance costs of the FirePro generators for the protection of the electrical panels were also decisive factors for the fire engineers.
