The Canadian Coast Guard’s (CCG) mission is to offer marine Search & Rescue (SAR) capabilities while supporting communication, navigation and transportation in Canadian waters. Its 118 strong fleet of mission-modular ships protects the longest coastline in the world. Based on the Atlantic coastal region, CCGs newest “Bay-class” vessels take the names of the areas they serve. These high-endurance, rescue crafts can operate up to 100 nautical miles from shore, delivering improved SAR ability.
Each Canadian Coast Guard rescue vessel is strategically stationed in order to be able to provide vital SAR capabilities during marine distress response calls and carry up to 10 persons to safety. For this reason, the requirement to protect CCG’s personnel and the vessels’ operational capabilities from fire is critical. Fire incidents in marine applications can be unforgiving and may be caused by engine malfunction, electrical faults, electrical storage systems, fuel leaks and human error.
Under its renewal mandate, the CCG is required to build and protect its next generation of vessels with fixed fire protection systems. The task is to design, supply and install a bespoke engine room fire protection system for CCGS Conception Bay high-endurance self-righting rescue vessels. The core requirements are robustness, performance, reliability and effectiveness. The system must also be compact, durable and have low maintenance requirements. It should be designed and installed according to local and international standards and regulations.
FirePro’s marine fire suppression systems have an exceptional reliability track record across a plethora of protected vessels around the world. They are non-pressurized and have very low maintenance requirements compared to other systems. They are robust, modular, compact and light in weight. Critically, they are fully compliant with the Canadian Marine Transportation authority regulations and latest requirements. Underwriters Laboratories Canada (ULC) certifies the FirePro condensed aerosol generators with an operational lifetime of 15 years. The FirePro fire suppression agent poses no threat to the environment and the marine life after is discharged.
FirePro technology was selected to safeguard CCG’s Conception Bay and its crew. Garvex designed and efficiently completed the installation of the FirePro fixed suppression system within the specified timetable. It now protects the engine bay and other critical equipment from fire on an around the clock basis. The technology is recognized by IACS based on IMO requirements, Transport Canada and UL Canada. FirePro and Garvex are honored to safeguard Conception Bay and other sister ships, allowing them to safely carry out lifesaving coastline operations in Canada.
