Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is a state corporation responsible to operate, improve and regulate all seaports of Kenya, including the primary Kilindini Harbour at Mombasa. The specific port is the gateway to East and Central Africa and is one of the busiest ports along the East African coastline. The port provides direct connectivity to over 80 Ports worldwide and is considered a sea link for a vast majority of nearby Central African states.
The Port’s operations are carried out by advance operating systems and electronic equipment. It was then deemed vital to protect key electrical equipment that keeps centralise operations run smoothly and uninterrupted. Incidents involving electrically induced fires as a result of defects, aging or unreliable power supply often cause massive collateral damage when left unchecked. Consequently, protection of mission critical equipment is of particular importance for the fire engineers.
Design, commission, install and maintain a fire detection and suppression system to protect all of the ports 12 Electrical Substations. The fire extinguishing technology needed to be efficient and effective, require little maintenance and be environmentally friendly. Additionally, it needed to have a very small footprint in order to fit within the very small electrical enclosures. The systems were required to protect the substations from fire autonomously and independently. Any electrically induced fire scenario that could prove disrupting to premises and operations needed to be avoided.
FirePro technology is able to connect to both conventional control panels as well as to remain entirely autonomous. Complementing this is the fact that the system has a 15-year lifetime cycle, no re-filling requirements and very low maintenance. Moreover, FirePro’s FPC Compound technology remains environmentally friendly even after activation. Consequently, the Port’s Authority fire engineer’s selected FirePro equipment as an ideal solution to protect the Substations and minimise the risk of disruption to operations. This offers peace of mind to operators while at the same time it reinforces there sustainability policy and environmental approach.
The systems were installed to all electrical substations by Trojan Fire Security specialists. With no piping required, FirePro equipment was quickly installed across all 12 stations. The units have a 15 year operational lifetime while the overall technology requires minimal maintenance. FirePro provides a reliable and cost effective solution to tackle possible fire hazards. At the same time the FirePro FPC compound remains safe for the environment even after activation thus reinforcing the efforts of KPA as an eco-friendly authority.
