ERGOSE S.A, a subsidiary of the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE), is responsible for managing and coordinating complex investment programs co-funded by the European Union. It specializes in the engineering and supervision of highspeed railway infrastructure such as tunnels, bridges, signaling, tele-commanding, telecommunications and electrification. It is ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management and OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational Health and Safety Management certified and driven by the Connecting Europe Facility for Transport.
The fire risks present in the Mount Othrys Tunnel are predominantly related but not limited to such hazards as those originating from electrical equipment, electrical faults, human error, maintenance issues and lightning. The consequences of fire in electrical enclosures in the Tunnel, on one of Greece’s busiest railway routes, can be devastating. Damage to key assets and other peripheral equipment means the possible discontinuity of service and extensive downtime as well as the endangerment of people.
Fire protection is mandatory for the protection of people and serves towards the avoidance of disruption to services in the 6.5 km long Othrys Tunnel (the second longest in Greece and one of the longest tunnels in South-Eastern Europe). For this purpose, the task was to design, supply, install and maintain a dependable fire suppression system to cover critical equipment such as low, medium and high voltage areas, pumps, telecom rooms, UPS rooms and stock areas in the tunnel.
FirePro has the international and European credentials attesting to the effectiveness of its technology. The system’s ease of installation, robustness, minimal space and low maintenance requirements, and 15-year product life are a few of the product attributes differentiating from rival technologies. What is more, the FirePro fire suppression systems can be easily integrated with existing control systems, enabling real-time system status feedback. Finally, by being environmentally friendly FirePro reflects ERGOSE’s philosophy regarding the use of products with the least or no environmental impact.
FirePro Hellas supplied a bespoke FirePro fire suppression system as per project specifications and in compliance with the required quality standards. For its part Hydrofire EPE designed and completed the installation of the system promptly within the set period of time. The system is now operational and protects the tunnel and its electrical equipment from fire related incidents in order to reduce damage to assets, down-time and/or other possible collateral damage.
