Paphos General Hospital is the main government medical centre of Paphos district. It covers 25,000 square meters of space over four stories. The pyramid shaped hospital is designed to offer all necessary A&E services as well as in-house medical care to patients. When it opened its doors in 1992 it was considered as one of the most advanced and best equipped medical centres in the Eastern Mediterranean.
It is the norm as statistics clearly indicate that major causes of fire are human error and electricity - generated fires from such sources as electrical shorts in electricity powered equipment. Another major source being flammable liquid fire occurring is such places as plant and generator rooms. In medical centres where highly immobile people are found rapid response to fire breakouts is obviously the number one consideration.
Design, supply, install, commission and maintain effective and efficient fire detection and fire extinguishing systems in electrical panels; the aim being the extinguishing of fire at its source and preventing it from spreading to adjacent flammable material that can ultimately endanger the building as a whole and consequently the lives of people who may not be able to help themselves to evacuating the premises. It was therefore of the utmost importance to install a system that is characterized by rapidity of response as well as versatility to enable its installation and indeed replacement in the event of it being activated.
In mission critical machinery of any kind, a fire does not only cause damage to equipment and buildings but can also wreak psychological havoc at its mere thought by physically challenged people who lie helpless in their hospital beds. Therefore the FirePro Technology having all the preset requisites, for the task at hand, such as versatility, ease of installation, modularity and compactness together with the all important rapidity of response characteristic was the system of choice for this application where the consequences of fire can be exponentially dire. Furthermore FirePro technology is in full conformity to both European and International regulations.
With no piping required and no pressurized cylinders the system was promptly installed. A few months after the installation an electrical panel overheated and caught fire. The fire was detected, tackled and extinguished by the FirePro system units, avoiding the total destruction of the panel, collateral damages and the possibility of failure of mission critical systems or equipment.
